Klimator & Digital Vinter

Digital Winter

In Digital Winter, a development project, initiated in 2019, multiple players come together to exchange competencies and increase the performance of solutions for the automotive and winter maintenance industry. Participants included in the project, apart from Klimator, is the Swedish Road Administration (TRV), Volvo Cars, Nira Dynamics, SVEVIA and RoadCloud, who jointly aim to create innovative solutions for increased road safety using data from connected cars, highly accurate predictive road forecast and stationary data, such as RWIS stations.

Using superior performance algorithms, Klimator provides both predictive and detective information of the road status into the project, as well as providing a data fusion platform. As a key player in the project, with more than 100 years of collective research within road weather, Klimator contributes with expertise in an area largely unknown. Based on the information collected from the different sensors and data sources, Klimator increases the safety and acts as an important player in the contribution for Vision Zero.

Vision Zero is a multi-national road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a

highway system with no fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic. It started

in Sweden and was approved by their parliament in October 1997.

In Digital Winter, multiple new data sources are made available for testing and integration into an already existing solution - to enhance performance and availability. Volvo Cars, Nira Dynamics and RoadCloud provide data from thousands of cars, which collect and analyse data from the friction between the tires and the road surface, and with the help from algorithms, the friction value can be compiled and sent to a cloud service. What is important to understand is that Klimator creates and increases the real value of car data. Car data can never alone be used as a safety function - its needs to be added into the right context - a context provided by Klimator.

Other data made available is highly advanced, and newly developed, stationary data installed at the projects testing site, in Enköping. The collective data from the project is then fused and integrated into Klimator´s Road Status Information platform - which is a decision support tool for the most innovative and forward-thinking winter maintenance companies that use the tool to simplify and streamline salting and snow removal work with the result: Safer roads, ultimately saving lives.

Road Status Information (RSI) is used by over 700 contractors in seven countries -

and QUALITY is the lead word for RSI. Klimator works endlessly to deliver quality in

all aspects, from forecast to nowcast, to support and customisation. Road Status

Information provides what the customer wants - a high-end decision support system

for safer roads and optimised winter maintenance.

With the information from Digital Winter, the Swedish Road Administration (TRV) can obtain qualitative data for better decisions and create safer and more environmentally friendly roads.
